Taiwanese and International Film Talents Meets at 2017 TFA Reception - Taipei Film Commission
Organized by Taipei Film Commission (TFC), the Reception of the 2017 Taipei Film Academy (TFA) was held at Tingba Music Lounge of Amba Taipei Ximending, Taipei, Taiwan on the evening of September 23rd, after a week of filmmaking forums and workshops. About 300 guests including Taiwanese film professionals, international lecturers and participants of the TFA were invited to gather in the warm evening, exchanging ideas and finding inspirations from each other.

Earlier in the afternoon, the 2017 TFA - “Filmmakers’ Workshop” wrapped up after 4 days of condensed courses. From Sep 20th to 23rd, “Filmmakers’ Workshop” collaborated with the Producers Guild of America (PGA) and invited veteran producers David U. Lee, Dongha Lee, John Heisen, Jonathan Hyong-Joon Kim, and Katayoon Shahabi to speak on their local and international film production experiences, the current status of Asian film market, and keys to get access to international market. During the closing ceremony, certificates were awarded to the participants by the 5 lecturers. Director Jennifer Jao also presented the lecturers with certificates of appreciation on behalf of TFC to show her profound gratitude.

At the reception party, the lecturers each gave some words to encourage the participants. David U. Lee was impressed by the support that Taipei City Government demonstrated to promote film industry. Dongha Lee and Katayoon Shahabi were both excited to have discovered the culture and film talents here in Taipei. John Heinsen, who joined the Academy for the second time, commented on PGA’s long-time collaboration with TFA and highlighted the importance of professional education. Jonathan Hyong-Joon Kim urged the participants to never abandon their passion for filmmaking, and improve the society through their works.
Since TFA’s establishment in 2014 and along with its growing scale, a new chemistry has been in formation. Earlier during the opening speech, Deputy CEO Ann Yang of Taipei Culture Foundation remarked that Taiwanese film talents benefited a lot from the courses, and she hopes to see the revival of Taiwanese film industry soon. Commissioner Chung Yung-feng of Taipei City Department of Cultural Affairs also attended the event to greet with the guests.
Old faces from past editions of TFA and active figures in Taiwan’s film and culture circles all came to take part in the event. Renowned director Chiang Chin-lin (Café, Waiting, Love), Chu Hsien-jer (White Ant), Huang Hui-chen (Small Talk), Jean-Robert Thomann (Petite histoire à la porte de l’ouest), Lai Chun-yu (An Odyssey of Dreams), Lee Show-chun (Shanghai Belleville), Lee You-ning (Second Spring of Mr. Muo), Lin Cheng-sheng (Betelnut Beauty), Lou Yi-an (White Lies, Black Lies), Nelson Yeh (The Mad King of Taipei), Ray Chang (Step Back to Glory), Toyoharu Kitamura (Love You 10,000 Years), Tso Shih-chiang (The Ghost Tales), Wan Jen (Super Citizen Ko), producers Chang San-ling, David Tang, Gisele Yeh, Jufeng Yeh, Lee Lieh, representatives of film-related associations, award-winning actress Yang Kuei-mei, renowned actor Archie David Kao, event hostess Fu Wei, Director Huang Wen-yan of Taipei Culture Foundation, Deputy CEO Ann Yang of Taipei Culture Foundation, TFC Director Jennifer Jao, and Deputy Director Christa Chen of Taipei Film Festival were seen in enthusiastic interaction with others. All seized the rare opportunity to meet new talents and gain different visions.
The 2017 Taipei Film Academy opened with Busan International Film Festival (BIFF) Chairman Kim Dong-ho’s “Cinema Master Forum” on Sep 18th, followed by “Screenwriters’ Forum” on Sep 19th. The Academy carried on with “Filmmakers’ Workshop” from Sep 20th to 23rd, and will continue with “Legal Aspects of Filmmaking Forum” and “Film Development Forum” on Sep 28th, before concluding with “International Animation and Special Effects Forum” on Oct 2nd.
